Beginner triathlon coaching · Bayside Melbourne
New to triathlon? Start here.
You don't need to be fit, fast or brave to join Mercury — you need one free trial session and a pair of goggles or runners. We'll coach you from your first lap to your first finish line.
Who beginner coaching is for
Mercury Performance Coaching provides beginner swim, bike, run and triathlon coaching in Bentleigh East, Hampton and across Bayside Melbourne — with a free trial first session, ability-grouped training and accredited coaches who specialise in getting first-time athletes to their first race.
Some of our members had never entered a race before joining. Some could run but not swim, or swim but hadn't ridden a bike since school. Others were coming back after years away, or crossing over from a single sport and unsure how to train for three at once. All of them started the same way: one trial session, one coach, one ability group that matched where they actually were.
Triathlon looks intimidating from the outside — three sports, transitions, gear, early alarms. Inside a coached squad it's much simpler: you turn up, the session is structured for you, and the coach worries about progression, technique and when you're ready for more. Whether your goal is fitness, a first sprint triathlon, or just learning to swim properly, the pathway is the same and it starts gently.
Your path from first session to first race
Try a session — free
Pick whichever discipline feels least intimidating and come along. Most beginners start with a swim squad at GESAC or a Tuesday run at Sandringham Athletics Track. A coach will meet you, ask about your background, and put you in a group that matches your level. No membership, no payment, no pressure.
Settle into a routine
Once you know the squad suits you, most beginners build up to two or three sessions a week — typically one swim, one run, and a ride or spin class. Casual rates let you pay per session while you find your rhythm, and a monthly package makes sense once you settle.
Pick your first race
When you're ready — and not before — your coach helps you choose a first event, usually a local sprint triathlon or a Try-a-Triathlon program run with Bayside Triathlon Club. Race-specific preparation, transition practice and pacing all get built into your normal training weeks.
Beginner questions, answered
How fit do I need to be to start triathlon training?
There is no minimum standard. Every session runs in ability groups, so you train at your own pace from day one. If you can swim a lap, ride a bike or jog for a few minutes, we can build from there — the structure and progression are the coach's job, not yours.
What gear do I need as a beginner?
Less than you think. For your first sessions: bathers and goggles for the pool, any roadworthy bike and a helmet for rides, and a comfortable pair of runners. Race wheels, wetsuits and tri suits can come much later — if at all. Our partner stores also offer squad discounts when you do need something.
I'm nervous about open water swimming. Do I have to start there?
No. Beginners start in the heated 50m pool at GESAC, where coaches can watch your stroke and build your confidence lap by lap. Open water sessions are introduced in season, in a supervised group, only when you feel ready — and plenty of members race their first triathlon off pool training alone.
How long until I could do my first triathlon?
Many beginners are ready for a local sprint or Try-a-Triathlon event within 8 to 12 weeks of consistent training. Your coach will help you pick the right first race with Bayside Triathlon Club and make sure the distance and course suit where you are, not where the bravest person in the squad is.
